“Capture the moments that matter”
For my selfie, I wanted to incorporate something I love and admire (and I’m not talking about myself), So I went straight for my polaroid camera. I love how polaroids look, so I wanted my own selfie to look like one. For my layout, I chose to take it up close, so you really focused on the polaroid. For lighting, I shone a lamp at my face on one side, since my face isn’t shown that much, I wanted whatever the viewer could see to standout. I think it also makes my hair have different tones to it. I like my lighting choices because you can see the shine on the polaroids sleek surface. I also made a border around my photo to try to make it look like a polaroid.
In my picture, I was trying to communicate that you should capture photos, because memories don’t last forever in your mind. My grandma loved taking photos of my mom growing up with their family polaroid, and it’s one of the qualities we share. I do admit, I have to empty my camera roll onto my computer once in a while due to full storage on my phone, but the photos I capture of my family and friends are worth it. I think my photo communicates all this because a polaroid is the camera my mom had and it represents how people have been capturing their memories for decades. I think it helps communicate this with the viewers because the camera is in the center of the frame and how all the colors reflect into it.
In the process of creating my image, I decided to scrap my original idea, since after creating it I realized it didn’t look like I wanted it to.. I think starting over when I already had an image ready really was a challenge in itself because the project was coming to the end and I just wasn’t happy with my final product. I solved this by just starting over with a simple idea that I knew had a lot of meaning to me and going with my gut. I really learned that something like a selfie can really represent who you are and can tell a story. Going into this project, I was on the no selfie bandwagon, but this project really showed me that selfies are positive and have been around for a long time. I really can’t wait for our next art project.
